The automotive industry vs the technology giants?

Now, is this really a battle of the egos? Auto OEMs are used to being “in charge” in their space and the tech giants ditto. Getting them to work together – which is what we need to really kick-start the Connected Car – is a challenge. They have different perspectives and different cultures. In one corner is a US-dominated industry with rapid product cycle times, highly dynamic eco-systems and a “launch beta then improve” mindset; and in the other a European (German dominated perhaps?) car industry with comparatively long product cycles, highly stable supply chains and a let’s get it right first time” mindset.
Imagine how the car manufacturer feels when an Apple or Google gives short notice on changes to its operating systems and APIs. In one real-life case, almost overnight an auto OEM discovers that an OS change has rendered aspects of their in-car screen displays useless. The tech company caused the problem and the automotive company had to fix it. Little wonder that the car companies are nervous about working with the technology giants – but they may have to find a way through it. How? Suggestions please….
